Telecom’s biggest problem in 2026 isn’t tech, it’s people

Telecom projects are accelerating. The scale is growing. The complexity is increasing.

But the talent needed to deliver them isn’t growing at the same pace.

That gap is already affecting execution across telecom and digital transformation projects.

The data confirms it:
• 42% of UK telecom firms already face a digital skills gap (FENews, 2024)
• 60% of telecom engineers are over 50, with just 3% under 35 (TechUK, 2024)
• 90% of organisations expect the IT skills crisis to impact them by 2026 (IDC, 2024)

For telecom and digital infrastructure programmes, talent planning can no longer sit at the end of the project timeline. It needs to be treated as a core delivery risk, alongside cost, scope and technology.
