Expanding Africa’s Digital Infrastructure Mapping

Building on the success of Salience’s previous Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping activities across Africa, during 2023, our GIS team focused on the optic-fibre backbone infrastructure in over 30 African countries. As a result, Salience substantially expanded its telecom-related GIS database, which we have developed over the past few years. By meticulously mapping critical optic-fibre infrastructure, we have enhanced our understanding of the diverse telecom landscape and infrastructural development across the African continent.

Our mapping approach involves close coordination with official representatives from each country and local communities to ensure the accuracy of our mapping. We examine the optic-fibre backbone (including operational, planned, and missing routes) and showcase the technological and connectivity status of specific countries throughout the continent.

Expanding on the previous mapping work in 2023, we added digital maps of Burundi, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Libya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tunisia, South Africa, DR Congo, Tanzania, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Comoros, Mauritius, The Gambia, Seychelles.

Salience Consulting’s GIS database now contains a wealth of spatial data for most of Africa. This data will be invaluable for our company and stakeholders’ research, planning, and decision-making. Equipped with this expanded dataset, we will continue to support stakeholders and partners in the telecom industries who rely on precise geographical information.
